Sad news, everyone. Orell Füssli is shutting down the English Bookshop at Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich.
Yesterday, Swiss newspaper Blick reported that The Bookshop by Orell Füssli on Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich is getting shut down. In its place, there will be a chain furniture store called Zara Home, part of the Zara fashion branding.
The Bookshop is slated to close around May 2016. But Zürich will not be without its English Books as what is now a separate store will be integrated as a department into the Orell Füssli store at Kramhof, which is close by.
Orell Füssli, part of the Thalia group that recently has purchased all of Orell Füssli has allegedly received 2.5 million Swiss Francs for moving out. This is a tactic by business owners that sees the future tenants of a building pay the current tenants a sum of money in order to basically buy the rent contract off of them.
With The Bookshop, a vital part of Uncanny history goes away. It is there where the founders of The Uncanny Book-Club met and it is on its doorsteps we decided that we’ll launch this project. We are sad to see it go.
We’ll keep you updated as more details arise.
