The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug – The Big Swiss Premiere

Tonight, we were invited to the official premiere of The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug. Also invited were Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, John Howe and Sylvester McCoy. This is what happens when not only big Hollywood stars show up, but also fans in costumes and top models.

Hours before the movie starts: Goblins and Orcs have allied themselves outside to chase children and snarl at cinema-goers. They’re accompanied by Elves and a young Hobbit whose feet are clothed in big houseshoes. The fans have dressed up for the very first showing of the second movie in the Hobbit-Trilogy. We’ve seen it a few days ago and here’s our review.

But before the movie, it’s time for for the fans to shine. The best dressed ones are asked to step on the red carpet that is – in the tradition of Swiss movie festivals – green. They get to stand next to Aidan Turner (Kili the Dwarf), Dean O’Gorman (Fili the Dwarf), Sylvester McCoy (Radagast the Brown) and John Howe who’s responsible for the look of Middle Earth.

The stars give autographs, answer questions.

«It’s a huge honour and not quite as challenging as you’d think to play an iconic character such as The Doctor or Radagast», says Sylvester McCoy after being asked by The Uncanny Book-Club. «The characters are well-defined, so I get to have a lot of fun with those parts.» But even out of character, Sylvester McCoy steals the show. He is larger than life, wearing a black suit and a very colourful vest and wielding a black-and-silver cane. Whenever he talks about Radagast the Brown, he rolls the R and refers to himself as Radagast.

Later, in the Q&A-session, Sylvester McCoy says the movie was interesting because he was often performing his part in front of a green screen. «There were even green people shaking the sled that I ride in the movie», he says. Yet viewers are presented with a full-fledged world full of vegetation and life.

Responsible for this is John Howe, Conceptual Designer. «I haven’t seen the movie yet», he says, «I’ve only seen parts of it, but those parts I’ve seen a lot.»

And again, Sylvester McCoy delivers the best anecdote. Clearly, the man is having fun. He talks about a scene in the first movie, where his character, whom he keeps referring to in the first person singular, heals a hedgehog.

«I was standing there with a plush hedgehog and I thought to myself <This is my scene>, annd then the Weta Guys make it this amazing live hedgehog that stole my scene», McCoy says.

That’s when the time comes for the night’s main event. The audience, made up of die-hard fans and choice guests, gets to watch The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug.

And here, last but not least, is the picture gallery from tonight!
